Qualitative Interviewing Resources

Books

  • My all-time favorite interview book is Learning from Strangers, by Robert Weiss.  I always assign this to my RAs.
  • Emerson et al.'s Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes focuses on ethnography, but has many useful tips for coding and rapport-building.
  • Ashley Rubin's Rocking Qualitative Social Science, is my prediction for the next big classic. Covers a lot of territory, fun to read.
  • Irving Seidman's Interviewing as Qualitative Research is also excellent. Interview-focused, straightforward, classic.

Prepping for Interviews

  • Tools4Dev has a nice short beginners' guide (focused on international development, broadly applicable).
  • Adams's chapter in the Handbook of Practical Program Evaluation is another good, short guide to prep.
  • The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has a useful list of interviewing resources.
  • I haven't looked in depth at this presentation by Valenzuela and Shrivastava yet, but it appears useful and has more resources at the end.
  • A very short (unattributed) guide from Harvard University with some basic strategies

Challenges, e.g. rapport

  • McGrath et al.'s list of tips, focused on medical researchers
  • Biddle et al.'s article on interviewing members of vulnerable populations (mental health focus)
  • My own article about establishing trust and reserving judgment, drawing heavily on my own study of cockfighting
  • An interesting short reflection from Clarke on how interviews can affect subjects, based on her interviews of older adults
  • Carter et al. on special challenges in online interviewing
  • Archibald et al. on using Zoom to conduct qualitative interviews
